Seapoint: A Swimmer’s heaven in South Dublin
Compartilhar
Seapoint is one of those places that feels like it’s hiding in plain sight. Sitting between Blackrock and Dun Laoghaire, it’s a gem of a swim spot and although very popular with locals it still manages to stay a little under the radar compared to the Forty Foot, even though the DART practically stops right at its doorstep.
A Closer Look at Seapoint
When you first arrive, the scene is beautiful. The swim area stretches out in front of you, framed by jagged rocks on either side and jetties. The sandy patches might not be postcard-perfect, but they’re soft underfoot, especially when the tide’s out.
Beyond the shore, the view opens up to Dublin Bay. To the north, you’ll see Howth Head’s distinctive silhouette rising in the distance along with the Poolbeg towers. On clear days, the whole scene feels like a watercolour painting—soft and serene, with just enough movement in the water to remind you it’s real.
What’s Nearby?
Head North, and you’ll find yourself in the busy village of Blackrock, with its popular market , the Frascati Centre, Blackrock shopping centre and a good mix of old-school pubs and trendy eateries. Walk a little south, and you’re in Dun Laoghaire, which is bigger than Blackrock and lots of options for eating, drinking and shopping.
Right next to Seapoint is a Martello Tower, a stout, round relic from the early 1800s. It’s like a little time capsule perched by the sea. You’ll often see people using it as a windbreak when they’re drying off post-swim.
Recent Touch-Ups
Lately, Seapoint’s been getting some love. The council’s put in better paths, making it easier to navigate the sometimes-slippery rocks. There are new handrails leading into the water, which are great when your feet are trying to decide if they really want to touch that first icy wave.
There’s also been a big push to keep the water quality high. Seapoint holds a Blue Flag, which basically means you’re not swimming in questionable conditions—important for anyone who isn’t keen on sharing their swim with too much seaweed or the odd rogue plastic bottle.
Why Swim Here?
Seapoint’s charm is its simplicity. It doesn’t try to wow you with flashy amenities or endless sand dunes. It’s just good, honest sea swimming. Whether you’re a seasoned cold-water enthusiast or someone looking to dip their toes into open-water swimming for the first time, Seapoint feels welcoming. You’ll always see a mix of people here—some in wetsuits, some in nothing but their togs and a brave face, all grinning as they emerge from the chilly water.
It’s not just about the swim, either. There’s something special about sitting on those old stone steps afterward, towel wrapped around you, watching the light shift over the bay. It’s a slice of Dublin life that feels both timeless and refreshingly low-key.
So, whether you’re there for a quick dip, a long swim, or just to soak up the vibe, Seapoint delivers. No frills, no fuss—just a great spot to connect with the sea and clear your head.
